Animal Welfare Economics:
A Growing Field
Animal welfare economics examines the economic dimensions of animal welfare, studying how economic forces influence animal welfare outcomes, how welfare considerations shape economic decisions and market outcomes, and how economic analysis can inform policies and practices that improve animal welfare across agricultural, domestic, and wild settings.
The Animal Welfare Economics Working Group exists to coordinate and support an international, interdisciplinary network of researchers with these shared interests.
The working group promotes this goal by:
Facilitating connections between economists and those working in relevant fields, such as animal welfare science, philosophy, political science, and policy, by holding an annual in-person conference, running online seminars, and fostering new collaborations between researchers.
Developing a research agenda for the field based on the community’s understanding of the highest impact frontiers of research.
Providing small grants to individuals and teams to accelerate their work, including funding for doctoral students and postdocs.
